Lovely Hoffman is a recording-artist, songwriter and IRNE award-winning actress. She gained notoriety when she played the lead role of Celie, in the New England Premiere of Speakeasy Stage Company's musical production of The Color Purple, which she received an IRNE award for Best Actress in a Musical. In 2017, Lovely released her single, My Black Is Beautiful, a song about self-love, self-acceptance and Black pride, which went viral and received national acclaim and recognition from media outlets across the country including CNN, Essence, and Teen Vogue. In the wake of the death of Michael Brown and Eric Garner in 2014, Lovely felt compelled to write a song and direct a music video entitled, Black Lives Matter, to stand in solidarity with families who were victims of injustice. Upon releasing this song Lovely stated, "for me art must reflect the feelings and experiences of the people and the time." In May 2015, her "Black Lives Matter" music video won First Place at the San Francisco Black Film Festival.
